Let’s see: the pie dish, the roaster, the chandelier, the framed prints on the wall and the fabric for her pants. Just some of Lonnie Gordon’s yard-sale finds.
Lonnie Gordon loves yard sales. But as is often the case, the overused verb doesn’t quite capture her passion.
It’s not just that she goes to as many yard sales as she can, hitting the street every Friday and Saturday, guided by newspaper ads and satellite technology. “I’ve got GPS,” she says, beaming.
No, it’s the extent to which the things she finds have become integral and valued pieces of her world.
Pay a visit to Gordon’s 17-room house on Leighton Avenue in Red Bank, and prepare to get a curated view of her second-hand treasures. A mahogany writing table ($40). A set of wineglasses ($2). An electric skillet ($7) that she calls “the best damn thing I ever bought.”

The Red Bank Townwide Yard Sale, which debuted in 2008 with more than 150 homes participating, returns for its second edition on September 12, rain or shine.
Once again, Red Bank is expected to become a border-to-border bargain-hunter’s paradise.
On this webpage, redbankgreen will be pulling together all the information you’ll need about the sale, whether you’re a seller or buyer.

They came in waves, bending over tables laden with glassware, flipping through clothing hung neatly overhead in the garage, sizing up and weighing the furniture with their eyes.
These were the prospective customers of Jennifer and Dan Kelly when the couple and their two children held a yard sale at their Little Silver home in early August. And the Kellys were determined that as many of their visitors as possible take something away and leave behind a little cash.
“We’re doing this just to make some money and clean the house,” said Jennifer, eyeing the furniture in the driveway herself, and wondering whether it would find new home before the day ended. “But with furniture, you never really know.” Read More »
“You don’t get paid for sentiment,” says yard sale manager Tina Bivona.
With the national economy in a Dumpster, and the real estate market constituting something like the gunk at the bottom of that receptacle, real estate agent Anna ‘Tina’ Bivona has found a bit of a hedge for herself.
She has a sideline in arranging estate and yard sales. And given the desire for most households to generate a bit of cash, “business has really picked up this year,” she told redbankgreen last week.
Anyone can drag their unwanted stuff out to the driveway call it a yard sale, of course. But doing it right — that is, maximizing your potential return — takes some forethought, and yes, a fair amount of sweat and hustle.
“It’s fun, but it’s a lot of work doing a sale,” says Bivona, of Red Bank.

Here’s a quick primer on the Red Bank Townwide Yard Sale.
What is it?
The townwide yard sale is a community-wide event in which all residents are encouraged to hold yard sales at their homes at the same time. It’s a rain-or-shine event scheduled for Saturday, September 12 from the hours of 9a to 3p — though of course you may start earlier and run later.
What’s the purpose?
It’s a way for neighbors to rub elbows in a way they might not otherwise, and for out-of-towners to see a side of life in Red Bank they might be unfamiliar with — the residential side.
It’s a way for sellers to get rid of unwanted household items, clothing and other treasures, while putting a little cash into the household treasury.
Plus, it keeps a lot of stuff out of the waste stream.
Ask any devotee of yard sales about the appeal of the endeavor, and nearly every one of them will eventually say something positive about the social aspects of mingling among strangers who, after just a few minutes of conversation, don’t seem like strangers after all.
Camera and notebook in hand, redbankgreen recently visited a handful of yard sales in Red Bank and Little Silver, and found there’s something to the idea that wandering among tables on a Saturday morning is, indeed, a pleasant way to meet people.
